Second Day of Orientation - UCSI September Intake 2015

My second day of orientation in UCSI ended today! Overall it was a great experience with a lot of activities! :D Today, we are asked to wear sportswear to the Dewan Tan Sri Ahmad Razali (DeTSAR) for more activities.

Let's start with the itinerary of Day 2 Orientation:

Student Registration

As in the first day of Orientation, we have to register ourselves at the hall. However, it seems a little different as we are given a ribbon when we enter the hall. I got a white ribbon and to my surprise, we are going to be separated into groups according to the ribbons in some group activities. After that, I met with some course mates met yesterday and did our course selection.

We just login to the Integrated Information System (IIS) portal for students then select the courses we would like to attend this semester. My selection is shown below:
Yeah, since I am doing Foundation in Arts, leading to Actuarial Science, so basically my courses are mostly business or math-related. Everything could just done by our fingertips, I really appreciate this system~

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) Briefing Session

Then, the Second day of Orientation started with the PAL briefing session. What is PAL? It is a program to aid students who have problems in their studies. However, there is no any lecturer being involved in this program, instead the students who excel in their studies would help others without any fees or terms. A great program right? This would definitely benefit me one day.

Student Affairs & Alumni Briefing Session

Huhu, it's the most inspiring session in the whole orientation. The organizer invited one of the alumni to deliver a speech on the secret how he get excellent grades in university. He is an engineering student with a First-Class Honour Degree as well as a Validator! Wow! What an amazing person, as he said, a validator is someone who was chosen to be the best students among the batches, and there would be only one in every graduation. To be qualified as a Validator, one must possess excellent grades and remain active in co-curricular activities.

Apart from that, he have won a lot of Dean's Award from UCSI University over the past few years.

What I like most is the sentence he said below,
Your Attitude determine Your Altitude
His speech was really motivating, everyone even claps for him after he shared his stories. And I hope one day, I could be the one who can inspire others towards a better life. To achieve this, one must excel in both academic as well as leadership skills which is what I am learning right now. Joining a Toastmasters International club is a good option.

Student Council Briefing Session

It's 9.00am when the programme shift towards the Student Council Briefing Session. So, what exactly is Student Council? You may have heard this the first time. Let me explain to you, Student Council is basically an organisation that represents students in an University or Schools. You may lodge any complaints to them or seek for their aid of your problems during your university life.

Doesn't this sound great to you? And below is a snippet taken from UCSI Unversity Student Council's official page:
WE are an organization run and owned by students for the benefit of all students in UCSI University. We act as the voice for the students to the Management Board of UCSI University and function as the "caretakers" of the students needs. The great thing about UCSI U's Student Council is that it is solely run and executed by Us, The Students!
Other than standing up for the students. the Student Council also offers some great services that can bring convenience to you! They provide lockers and printing services with just a small charges. Apart from that, if you lost anything in UCSI campus, you would probably find your lost item at the Lost and Found section!

That's how the President of Student Council, Miss Felicia introduced the function of Student Council in UCSI University.

Ice Breaking + Grouping Session

Again, all the freshie have to go through the Ice Breaking Session! Yet, everything went different in the second day of orientation, I am not feeling so shy anymore, instead, I began to talk to others with own initiative. I found out that, most students are willing to get known with you too!

Remember what I have mentioned above? I was given a white ribbon, and now, it determine which group I am in. The White Group!

The interesting activities start right now. But first, we have to introduce ourselves to our group members. To my surprise, a lot of the members are actually came from Indonesian. And one of the Indonesian members told me that, he came Malaysia with nine friends by plane. Then, we named our group as the "Snow White" which was a lovely name. Yet, it is certainly not a name that can bring motivation XD .

Senior-Junior Session

I have no idea why the Academic Excellence session is skipped through or maybe I am unaware of the activities. This is because in this Senior-Junior session, the freshies are able to communicate with the Facilitators and asked them about the courses that we would go through in the future. Apart from that, this is also a great time to meet with your seniors where you would know a lot of useful information in the future!

Lunch + Student Organisation Booth

Then, we went to the Multi Purpose Hall (MPH) located at Block A for our lunch. After finishing my lunch, I went back to the Dewan Tan Sri Ahmad Razali and visit several Student Organization Booth. One of the booth caught my attention, it was the ASSA (Actuarial Science Student Association) Club. As I mentioned before, I am going to be an actuarial science student in UCSI next year, thus, this club is just right for me. Look, this is the club and the preview above is from their facebook page. I had the opportunity to talk with the club's President, Siaw Hui. She introduced to me some activities carried out by the clubs, including Professional Career Talk and outings which could benefit those Actuarial Science students in the future.

Orientation Day 2 #happeningnow #USchos #ucsians2015
Posted by U-Schos on Tuesday, August 25, 2015

Also, I past by the U-Schos Club at the corner of the hall. U-Schos stands for The UCSI Scholars’ Club which is made up by awardees of UCSI University Trust Scholarships, whose achievements demonstrate a sustained level of excellence in academics, sports and extra-curricular activities.

As I am getting scholarships from UCSI University Trust, I am automatically become the member of U-Schos. I was told that the club members would have the opportunities to join Self-Enrichment Programs from time to time. This is to ensure that all the scholars can constantly improve ourselves in both academic and non-academic aspects.

IIS and LMS Refreshing Briefing

Again, we are being introduced to the function of IIS and LMS. However, this time, the speaker told us the way to enroll ourselves into the classes. Through that, we could download all the lecture notes and do quizzes just using the LMS. It was a short but informative briefing session.

Group Activity

This is the climax of the whole orientation day! The attendees are grouped once again according to our ribbon color. This time, we have to play station games and earn points for my "Snow White " team. The playing area is around the whole campus while we need to travel forth and back to collect points. My group got 440 points after fighting for 1 hour, yet, we are not the winner haha. Instead, the winner is "The Minion" as they got 510 points in the games. Wow! Congratulation to them!

Closing

It's 3.30pm right now and the 2-Day Orientation has come to an end. The Vice-Chancellor cum President, Senior Professor Dato' Dr. Khalid Yusoff, was invited to deliver a speech to all of the freshie. His words are encouraging where he told us that studying in University is totally different from high school. We need our own effort to complete everything, to gain everything and to succeed in everything. The whole speech ends with thunderous loud applause.

Conclusion

The orientation days in UCSI is quite interesting to me where I am able to familiar with the school compound and rules & regulation. When I share this experience with my other friends, they told me that my orientation experience is much more hilarious than their's! What they did was sitting all day long in their campus' hall.

I think, the group activities and ice-breaking session makes UCSI orientation days differ from other universities. There's a lot of fun during the 2-day activity.

First day of Orientation

The first day of orientation in UCSI is amazing! It's a rare opportunity to mix around with all freshie in UCSI today and I managed to get known with a few course mates today!

First of all, let's start with the itinerary of the First Day orientation:

The whole programme started at 8.00am with the student registration at the ground floor of the Block C. So, I must prepare myself at the morning of 6.30 am and drive out from my residential area at around 7.30am. Luckily, the whole traffic is not congested. I manage to get to UCSI campus in just 15 minutes.

Though there are a lot of cars on the way I went to UCSI, the traffic was smooth. You know you are arriving when you see the Angkasa Condo, the buildings in yellow colour. For your information, Angkasa Condo is just located beside UCSI unveristy south wing campus, thus, most of the students would choose to stay there during their studies. If you are a foreign students, don't worry about the accomodation, you can easily find places to live here.

I arrive UCSI just at 8.00am and fortunately got myself a parking in the campus. Then, I can see a lot of students are heading to the Block C to gather at Dewan Tan Sri Ahmad Razali (Detsar) for the whole day orientation programme. Before that, I went to register myself with the Student Affairs & Alumni (SAA). I could say, their effiency is inpressive, it just took me less than 15 seconds to get everything done. They just went through everthing using the IIS portal and all booklet and student handbook are given in a modern way.

This is what I received:
A booklet with all the orientation information and a card. That card is actually a 2gb pendrive which contain:
  1. Orientation Kit
  2. Student Handbook PDF
  3. Policy Handbook PDF
Everything is done by a card! What an easy way!

After that, all students entered the DeTSAR and wait for the orientation to begin. The whole ambience is relaxing with some background music as well as the Facilitators welcome us with warm smile on their face. I was impressed when I realise that those facilitators are actually one sem older than us. And yet, they can handle the programme well!

Then, the programmes begin. We start with the Imaugration Ceremony with two hosts, who both of them are UCSI senior students. Then, singing our National Anthem, Negaraku. During the session, I manage to meet a guy, who is going to do the exactly same Foundation programme with me. We get know each other soon. Well, unilife right, just mix around with people! Maybe you can know someone who might change your life (?)

Then, everthing went classical with the performance of UCSI School of Music students as the opening performance.

The performance is followed by the Welcome Speech by Student Council. Her speech was indeed motivating! Maybe I would join Student Council one day as a new challenge.

The Vice-Chancellor then greet us with an inspiring speech.

I think this is the most important session throughout the whole day. All the new students have to pledge to ensure that we can pursue a better qualification under UCSI university. Well, I would remember my promise~

Soon, the welcome ceremony comes to an end. Again, the performance is delivered by students from the School of Music. But everything went Pop now as they are singing Style and Thirller.

After the ceremony, the pictute of activites are not taken as we have to empty our hands to get know with each other during the Ice Breaking session.

They eemcees managed to influence the whole hall so that we won't feel so shy to say Hi to each other.

Next, was the IIS and LMS briefing session. I would explain it in another post later on. After our lunch, we had the chance to meet some UCSI graduates to learn from their experiences in the UCSIans' Life. What I feel most important is that, one should really take their study years in university seriously while enjoying your unilife. Just get yourself some attachment during your term break!

The Ice Breaking session again, makes everyone familiar with each other. While in the Faculty Briefing Session, I, as the Foudation in Arts student, was led to the Recital Hall. We were given some informative talk about the IIS course selection and future pathway after the foundation year. And from that I knew, UCSI cooperate with a lot of famous university aroud the world as to place us in a great future. The talk was given by the Director of Centre for Pre-U, Dr. Mabel Tan.

The whole orientation programme for Day 1 ends here! Come back tommorrow for the Day 2 details!

First Post of My Unilife - Count Down

It's 11.36 pm now but I am still facing my phone typing this blog post.

Frankly, this is my first time writing a blog post, yet I have some experience in managing a wordpress self-hosted website. My wordpress self-hosted website is this: http://www.spmsoalan.com which is an educational website which share SPM related information.

Back to the post, the reason why I am setting up this blog includes these reasons:

  • Feel the experience of managing a daily blog
  • Enhance my html skill
  • Share my university life in UCSI university (KL campus)
That's right, I am going to a be UCSI students soon and guess what, tomorrow would be my orientation day for my foundation year. Let's take a look with the activities tommorrow:

The registration would start at 8.00am at Dewan Tan Sri Ahamd Razali. After that, all the students would be packed with lots of activities! I am looking forward with what's going on tomorrow. By the way, I am taking the Foundation in Arts of Actuarial Science and Architecture pathway which means, the course would mainly focus in Mathematics subjects and business-related modules.

I am going to live a new life in UCSI for my coming 4 years! Hope I can adapt to the unilife soon~ After foundation, I would continue my studies in actuarial science.

I heard a lot positive review of UCSI in the actuarial science courses as they could nurture a bunch of students who passed merely all the SoA examination papers before their graduation. This is not an easy task to the majority, so this is the main reason I choose to pursue my studies in this university. (Of course, one should be hardworking to get excellent result).

Okay, the clock struck 12 now. And I should end the first post at here, would update the orientation information tomorrow at here.
